Why choose a BTEC in Sport?
In the past two years, more than 232,000 learners enrolled on a BTEC in Sports course. The BTEC in Sport, with its wide range of units, choice and flexibility is the most advanced vocational sport qualification available today. The new Sport specifications have been improved making them even more flexible and up to date than before. Let’s take a look at how they can help your learners along the path to achieving their goals and their dreams.
Progression for learners
A BTEC in Sport can help your students achieve their full potential. Learners are rewarded along the way for consistent hard work and demonstration of their knowledge. A BTEC in Sport offers active learning in a vocational context and builds confidence, competence and motivation in your learners.
Flexible to fit around your curriculum
Some learners are incredibly focused, determined to make a success of their chosen career in sport. For others, it’s not so clear cut. A BTEC is a flexible qualification, made up of a number of units, which are
determined by the level and size being studied. These units can be taken independently or alongside more traditional qualifications, to suit the interests and the aspirations of the learner. Teachers and tutors can work together to plan and create their own resources or use our new and improved range of support materials.
Engaging for everyone
Students, of all abilities, often fail to see the link between what they learn in an academic sense and the world of work. BTECs in Sport change all that. The vocational learning style is completely different
from the more traditional routes. Students may research their topics and present results in a wide variety of ways other than written text. They don’t have to work alone – group interaction can often play a part, for example through teamwork and role-play. BTECs can engage and enhance the performance of all learners, who recognise that the skills they are developing are those that employers will value. They are learning in a practical way without the need to commit to an apprenticeship.
Rewarding hard work and effort
Students learn best when they can apply their own knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to a subject. In a subject like sport, and in others, it’s often the case that learners are already motivated, knowledgeable
and enthusiastic. It’s right that this natural energy can be focused and rewarded. A BTEC in Sport allows it to happen. Hard work is rewarded. Assessment is ongoing, motivating students to analyse and improve their own performance.
Courses to support part-time and workplace learners
Our BTECs in Sport are not only for those in full-time education. Those already employed in the sport sector can study for the BTEC Level 2 or BTEC Level 3 on a part-time basis. Knowledge and expertise gained in the workplace is valued and can play a part in the assessment methodology. School leavers and adults alike can continue to pursue an interest in sport and a desire to learn through the BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Sport. These courses are designed to motivate, building on the achievements from Key Stage 4 or other level 2 qualifications for those that wish to explore a vocational route at level 3.
The widest range of sport options of any qualification
A BTEC in Sport from Edexcel offers by far the widest range of sport options available of any qualification. Our Sport qualifications are structured to allow learners and centres maximum flexibility in their selection of specialist units. This inherent flexibility means your centre is free to develop a sport qualification that can truly inspire, by reflecting the interests and skills of your learners. You are encouraged to make the most of local communities such as football, cricket clubs, outdoor adventure centres and sports facilities for work experience and visits.
Relevant, unique, brand-new content
Our BTECs are not only wide-ranging and flexible; we also ensure their content is also regularly revised to keep them up-to-date and in line with the latest regulatory requirements and the aspirations of learners. This year, BTECs in Sport have undergone some important revisions to ensure they are in keeping with the Qualifications and Credit Framework QCF.

This year, BTECs in Sport have undergone some important revisions to ensure they are in keeping with the Qualifications and Credit Framework QCF. This has given us the opportunity to incorporate some unique and exciting benefits:
- Units will now be linked to additional external qualifications, making a BTEC in Sport an even more versatile achievement. For example, a BTEC in Sport can provide a route and prepare students should they take extra qualifications alongside their BTEC, such as a Community Sports Leaders Award, a Duke of Edinburgh Award or a Sports National Governing Body coaching qualification.
- We have carried out detailed mapping of the new BTECs in Sport meaning that they are now even more closely aligned to the units of competence comprising the National Occupational Standards (NOS). For potential employers, this gives additional assurance of the value of the award.
