Over 2 million people work in the UK’s construction industry*. A BTEC in Construction is an ideal way to acquire sought-after skills. Our BTECs in Construction develop the craft skills and knowledge learners will need to enter the many vocations within the construction industry – or as a stepping-stone into higher education. With a range of specialist units available, learners can tailor their course to reflect their own aspirations. Ongoing assessment, with no end of year exams, ensures learners remain engaged as they work towards a qualification that’s recognised and respected both by the construction industry and higher education institutions.

Progression for learners
A BTEC in Construction can help your students achieve their full potential. Learners are rewarded along the way for consistent hard work and demonstration of their knowledge. A BTEC in Construction offers active learning in a vocational context and builds confidence, competence and motivation in your learners.
Freedom to explore individual interests
The BTEC Firsts in Construction are ideal for trying out a range of related activities. Learners may follow a general path using a range of different specialist units or one of the recommended specialist pathways that offer greater depth.
Flexible to fit around your curriculum
Some learners are incredibly focused, determined to make a success of their chosen career in construction. For others, it’s not so clear cut. A BTEC is a flexible qualification, made up of a number of units, which are determined by the level and size being studied. These units can be taken independently or alongside more traditional qualifications, to suit the interests and the aspirations of the learner. Teachers and tutors can work together to plan and create their own resources or use our new and improved range of support materials.
Engaging for everyone
Students, of all abilities, often fail to see the link between what they learn in an academic sense and the world of work. BTECs in Construction change all that. The vocational learning style is completely different from the more traditional routes. Students may research their topics and present results in a wide variety of ways other than written text. They don’t have to work alone – group interaction can often play a part, for example through teamwork and role-play. BTECs can engage and enhance the performance of all learners, who recognise that the skills they are developing are those that employers will value. They are learning in a practical way without the need to commit to an apprenticeship.
The skills to go straight into a job
Learners wishing to go straight from a BTEC First into employment will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding to enter any of the following occupations: bricklayer, carpenter and joiner, painter and decorator, plasterer, roof slater and tiler, dry liner, wall and floor tiler and construction operative.
Rewarding hard work and effort
Students learn best when they can apply their own knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to a subject. In a subject like construction and in others, it’s often the case that learners are already motivated, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It’s right that this natural energy can
be focused and rewarded. A BTEC in Construction allows it to happen. Hard work is rewarded. Assessment is ongoing, motivating students to analyse and improve their own performance.
Courses to support part-time and workplace learners
Our BTECs in Construction are not only for those in full-time education. Those already employed in the construction sector can study for the BTEC Level 2 or BTEC Level 3 on a part-time basis. Knowledge and expertise gained in the workplace is valued and can play a part in the assessment methodology. School leavers and adults alike can continue to pursue an interest in construction and a desire to learn through the BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Construction. These courses are designed to motivate, building on the achievements from
Key Stage 4 or other level 2 qualifications for those that wish to explore a vocational route at level 3.
Teaching the key skills
Our BTEC Firsts in Construction are engaging and motivating. Study programmes address the key areas of knowledge, understanding and skills required within the construction industry. Craft, operative and technician roles are all reflected in the course content.
Recognised by Industry
The BTEC Firsts in Construction are supported by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) within the construction sector, and link to the Occupational Standards for the sector where these are appropriate. The BTEC Nationals in Construction offer a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification in Construction, Civil Engineering or Building Services.
A solid basis for further study
Our BTEC Nationals offer an important first step for learners entering employment who want to work towards an apprenticeship in their sector, or to progress to further education vocational qualifications such as the BTEC Higher Nationals in Construction, Civil Engineering or Building Services Engineering or Foundation degree or other degree course.
