Edexcel has been working with the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills into the WorkSkills suite of BTEC qualifications.
The WorkSkills STEM pathway is unique
STEM learning develops personal and leadership capabilities with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The aim is to:
-
Increase motivation to learn STEM subjects
-
Improve the chances of learners applying these skills in the workplace
-
Raise the expectations and aspirations of learners
-
Give added value to their work in STEM subjects.
The units develop, test and challenge learners’ leadership capabilities through practical, engaging and inspiring self-driven opportunities. The balanced learning programme concentrates on developing their collaborative and thinking skills in STEM as well as enhancing self-awareness and a belief in their own abilities.
The STEM qualifications
The STEM Certificate is a 13-credit qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2. Learners take five units available at Level 1 and Level 2 to make 10 credits (each unit is worth two credits). Learners who don’t complete the full Certificate can still receive a general WorkSkills Award (3 credits).
