The pilot began in September 2005. The qualification creates a new approach to GCSE English while still reflecting the current Programmes of Study and Subject Criteria for English and English Literature. It has been designed to explore some of the ideas around communication and functional literacy through a core Communication Unit.
The specification offers a choice of seven ‘bite-sized’ units to support students in achieving and progressing. Individual units can be accredited as a short course (half) GCSE.
Students study two units for a GCSE Single Award or four units for a GCSE Double Award. Students are required to complete one unit for the Short Course Award.
The Edexcel pilot introduces new areas of study including Spoken English Studies, The Moving Image and The Language of Digital Communication, whilst maintaining the option of Literature. The range of units offered means that centres create a programme to match their students’ interests and needs.
This innovative qualification has been developed after extensive consultation with teachers, advisors and those with specialist knowledge. We are pleased that the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA) has supported this development.
A comprehensive package of support is being created by leading subject experts. The flexible approach to Literature means that the use of existing resources is possible.
