Additional information

This Student Book is written for students following the InternationalGCSE Specification B in Mathematics and contains numerous exercises and examples as well as much consolidation material. There are more than 3000 questions in the book, allowing students to get lots of practice before sitting their exams. Paired questions in each exercise with students having access to the answers to odd-numbered questions only are a key feature of the book.

 

The book contains ten units of work, with each unit containing the following five sections:

1) Number
2) Algebra
3) Functions and Graphs
4) Mensuration, Geometry and Trigonometry
5) Sets, Statistics and Probability, Vectors and Matrices.

 

In each section there are:

  • Concise explanations and worked examples, with highlighted Key Points.
  • Activities which lead pupils to discover mathematical principles for themselves.
  • Investigations which prepare students for independent thought.
  • Numerous parallel exercises with the second exercise being more challenging than the first, allowing students to consolidate basic principles before attempting more difficult questions. All exercises are carefully graded in difficulty to give students confidence.
  • Each exercise has paired questions with answers supplied to the odd-numbered questions only. This allows pupils to check their answers and monitor their own progress as well as allowing for independent work and tests. The full set of answers is available to teachers on our website. Real data is used wherever possible to make questions meaningful to students. At the end of some exercises there are more challenging questions that are marked in blue.
  • Each section ends with a parallel revision exercise.

Each unit ends with two exam style practice papers. Unit 10 is a revision unit.

 

In addition, at the end of the book there are:

Author Biographies

D A Turner read Civil Engineering at Loughborough University and taught Mathematics at Oundle School, where he is also a housemaster. He has written a number of successful Mathematics textbooks, including Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A.

I A Potts studied Aeronautical Engineering and pursued a career in Engineering before doing a degree in Mathematics and becoming a teacher. He has co-authored many successful textbooks in the past, most recently Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A.

W R J Waite read Mathematics at Sheffield University and was Head of Mathematics at Aldenham School and John Lyon School, and a housemaster at Aldenham School.

B V Hony read Mathematics and Physical Education at Loughborough and taught Mathematics at Ellesmere College and Oundle School. He became a successful Mathematics author and later set up his own Mathematics publishing company that lead to the Active Mathematics series published by Longman.
