Functional skills | Assessment

There’s plenty of opportunity for assessment

We know that you’ll want to fit functional skills around your other programmes of learning – that’s why we’re offering more assessment opportunities throughout the teaching year.

  Key Administrative Documents

Entry Level 1-3 (all subjects)

Entry Level functional skills assessment is internally assessed, externally verified and available on demand.

You can find more information in our Information Manual for 2011-12.

Level 1-2 - paper-based assessment (all subjects)

Edexcel is accredited to offer functional skills across all three subjects at Level 1 and 2, over a series of five-day assessment opportunities.

Assessment dates for Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 from September 2011

There are unlimited resit opportunities for those learners who do not pass first time.

How are the individual subjects assessed?

  • For mathematics and ICT there is one test per level, which is set and marked by Edexcel.
  • For English there are two external tests. The Reading and Writing units are set and marked by Edexcel. Speaking, Listening and Communication is formally assessed through an internally set and marked test.

Level 1-2 - onscreen, on-demand assessment
(English and maths)

We know it’s important to have the flexibility to enter learners for assessment whenever they’re ready, so in addition to our fixed assessment windows, we also offer onscreen, on-demand testing for English (Reading and Writing) and mathematics across Levels 1 and 2.
