Functional skills | Structure

Functional skills are available at Entry Levels 1-3 and Levels 1 and 2 in English, mathematics and ICT.
Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3 are internally assessed at your centre and externally verified. Levels 1 and 2 are assessed by Edexcel (excluding the English Speaking, Listening and Communication component). You will need approval to deliver the qualifications before registering your learners and reporting learner achievement.

You can enter your learners for all functional skills examinations using traditional paper-based tests, or through our onscreen on-demand testing service (English and maths only).
  • Onscreen, on-demand exams: English and maths

You can now use our onscreen testing software to deliver on-demand exams for Level 1 and 2 English (Reading and Writing components) and mathematics qualifications. You will need install the software and register your learners, who can then be booked onto the onscreen exam up to two hours beforehand.

The English Speaking, Listening and Communication component is assessed at your centre, and you will need to submit entries for this separately.

  • Paper-based exams: English, mathematics and ICT

Exams are delivered over a number of five-day exam sessions. You will not need to register your candidates, but you will need to make entries for the exams.

For the English qualification you will need to make separate entries for the Speaking, Listening and Communication component.
