These practical qualifications are designed to help learners gain the skills they would need to work in the land-based sector. A wide range of units are available covering horticulture, agriculture and animal care.
The qualifications are also suitable for learners who may be entering employment for the first time or those wishing to change their career or occupation. Some units have been designed as taster units eg Unit 3 Understanding Soils, to give learners an opportunity to experience some types of work in horticulture and soil science.
The qualifications give a broad overview of the tasks involved with looking after animals and looking after plants. Whilst learning the skills and knowledge for their chosen pathway, learners will also be developing employability skills, eg meeting deadlines, teamwork, following written and oral instructions.
Centres should arrange visits to a wide variety of centres including gardens and livestock markets, as well as inviting guest speakers; this will help learners to develop an understanding of the vocational context and future employment opportunities. It is envisaged that these qualification will be very practical in delivery and that assessment will also be practical.
