BTEC Firsts from 2012 and 2013 | Engineering

Assessment
The new BTEC Firsts in Engineering contain 2 forms of assessment:

  • Internal Assessment: Teacher-led assessment remains at the heart of the BTEC Firsts
  • External Assessment: Supporting teacher-led assessment: the right external assessment for Engineering.

External Assessment: how it works
Building on the rigorous assessment standards expected of BTEC qualifications, the new BTEC Firsts in Engineering include externally assessed units in all four sizes, comprising 25% of total assessment for the Award (120 GLH) and Certificate (240 GLH), 16% for the Extended Certificate (360 GLH) and 12.5% for the Diploma. We’ve designed the external assessment to be appropriate for the sector, reflecting the skills and aptitudes required for each profession.

The onscreen test for Engineering will be available on demand from the beginning of November 2013. Centres will need to book a test date in advance prior to the delivery of a test. Outside a minimum notice period, to be announced, centres will be able to schedule tests at any time which suits them and learners. Please also note that, as an awarded qualification, the results will not be made available straight away and that we will need sufficient learners to take the test to ensure the awarding process is valid prior to publishing the results.
