Alex puts much of his success down to his BTECs. “BTECs gave me a mix of academic and practical learning. They helped me gain a range of transferable skills like time management, and interpersonal skills. As you work a lot as a team, I also gained useful leadership skills as well.”

A modular learning approach and practical experience made BTECs particularly appealing. Alex wanted a course that offered him flexibility and scope. “With the BTEC we didn’t just cover the core subject, we covered topics around it as well. I think the course taught me to think outside the box, to think about roles outside of engineering”.

Armed with this broad range of skills Alex left college with so much more than a BTEC qualification. He was recently named IMECHE Engineer of the Year and was able to draw on his newly found entrepreneurial skills to become the founder of Future4All - a charity to help disadvantaged young people into work and education. Alex’s infectious enthusiasm and dedication in this area has seen him shortlisted for the prestigious Spirit of London Award, sponsored by The Sun newspaper and Barclays Bank.

Not content to rest on his Laurels, Alex is constantly looking to expand his knowledge and exposure to the working world. In fact, he recently arranged and carried out two work experience placements. One at the Edexcel Examination Board and one in the Cabinet Treasury Office.

“All of my achievements have come after or during my last BTEC. I’ve not just gained knowledge, but learned how to apply it.”
