Checking practice, supporting standards
What is Standards Verification?
-
Standards Verification is how we check that centres are operating quality assurance and assessing to the right standards.
- Standards Verifiers will work with centres to support them in demonstrating that they are working to the standards and addressing areas of weakness.
- Standards Verification is undertaken where Lead Internal Verifiers have not achieved accredited status, and can be used to confirm that registered Lead Internal Verifiers who attempted online standardisation can be accredited.
- Standards Verification is also undertaken for a sample of accredited Lead Internal Verifiers to confirm that they are continuing to maintain standards.
Why is it important?
- To provide guidance and support for centres in meeting requirements for national standards at an early stage.
- To provide a thorough review of assessment and verification against national standards over time.
- To encourage centres to continue to deliver best practice in vocational assessment.
- To provide a detailed report on verification and assessment practice for the relevant programmes.

Who is involved?
- For your centre: the registered Lead Internal Verifier, the Programme Leader (if a different person), members of the team of assessors and verifiers, and your Quality Nominee.
- For Edexcel: the Standards Verifier.
When does it happen?
- Standards Verifiers will be allocated to centres after each Lead Internal Verifier standardisation window closes.
- For confirmation sampling of programmes with accredited Lead Internal Verifiers, allocation of Standards Verifiers will take place from October.
- Standards Verifiers will complete sampling as early as possible, subject to your centre being able to provide suitable materials.
How does it work?
- Your Quality Nominee is notified that Standards Verification is required and contacted by the allocated Standards Verifier. The Quality Nominee should contact the Programme Leader and/or Lead Internal Verifier.
- The provision of an appropriate set of materials for sampling, with a delivery date, is agreed. This should be as early as possible to ensure that there is no delay in certification.
- The Standards Verifier reviews the quality of the assignment brief, the validity of the assessment decisions and the effectiveness of internal verification. If the sampling is successful, Lead Internal Verifier accreditation is confirmed and certification released.
- If the sampling shows that assessment standards or processes are incorrect, a second sample is required.
- After second sampling, a Standards Verifier can confirm certification. Alternatively, they can ask the Regional Quality Manager to work with your centre in order to ensure that certification is secure. To find out more about Regional Quality Managers, go to our Support page.
- Centres are expected to have accredited Lead Internal Verifiers or registered Lead Internal Verifiers working towards accreditation for all relevant qualifications. This will be monitored through Quality Review & Development.
