Checking practice, supporting standards
What is standards verification?
- Standards Verification is how we check that centres are operating quality assurance and assessing to the right standards.
- Standards Verifiers will work with centres to support them in demonstrating that they are working to the standards and addressing areas of weakness.
- Standards Verification ensures that centres have accurate assessment records and are assessing candidates appropriately, consistently and fairly.
- Where centres register on an Apprenticeship basis, verification will be coordinated across components whenever feasible.
- There will normally be one visit each year for programmes in a Principal Subject Area.
Why is it important?
- To provide a thorough review of assessment and verification against national standards and over time.
- To encourage centres to continue to deliver best practice in vocational assessment.
- To provide a detailed report on verification and assessment practice for the relevant programmes.

Who is involved?
- For your centre: the Programme Leader, members of the team of assessors and verifiers, and your Quality Nominee.
- For Edexcel: the Standards Verifier.
When does it take place?
- Standards Verification takes place at a time to suit your centre. The visit should be arranged at a point when sufficient records of assessment are available in order to confirm candidate achievement, but in good time to facilitate certification.
How does it work?
- The Quality Nominee is notified that a Standards Verifier has been allocated - normally in October or, for new programmes, four to six weeks after registration. The Quality Nominee should inform the Programme Leader.
- The Standards Verifier will contact your Quality Nominee in the first instance.
- An appropriate visit date and visit plan are agreed. This should be as early as possible to ensure that there is no delay in certification.
- The Standards Verifier reviews the quality of the assessment planning, the validity of the assessment decisions and the consistency of the assessment process. If the sampling is successful then direct claim status is confirmed.
- If the sampling shows that assessment standards or assessment processes are incorrect, then sanctions may be applied.
