Planning

What planning is needed?

  • Before you deliver a BTEC you should:
    • Read and understand the programme specification and understand assessment arrangements
    • Design assessment activities to guide learners to generate the appropriate evidence
    • Plan assessment activities and timescales
    • Ensure your assessment plan and assignments are checked by your Internal Verifier to check that they are fit for purpose.

Why is it important?

  • All QCF BTEC programmes are assessed by centre-devised assignments.
  • Assessment decisions are totally in the hands of centre staff.
  • Learners must have the opportunity to attempt all the grading criteria for the units delivered.

How does it work?

  • Read the specification and make sure that you know which units are to be delivered and how they will be sequenced.
  • Ensure that the relevant staff are in place to deliver, assess and internally verify the whole programme.
  • Assignments should be prepared so that, when combined, all targeted grading criteria are covered.
  • Timetables, schemes of work and assessment / Internal Verification schedules should be prepared.

When is it done?

  • It is important that sufficient planning is completed before the programme starts.
  • Plans should be monitored throughout the programme and amended if required.

Who is responsible?

  • The programme must be planned and monitored to ensure that all of the units are assessed. This may be done by the programme team, but is ultimately the responsibility of the Programme Manager.
  • It is good practice for your centre’s Quality Nominee to support the programme staff in devising and planning a BTEC.
  • Centre-wide procedures and standardised documents are also recommended.
