Why is it important?
- The certificate is the official record of a learner’s achievement of a qualification.
- Funding for centres, SCAAT points and so on may be linked to learner achievement.
How does it work?
- Once a learner is registered, Student Report Forms (SRFs) are sent out (unless your centre has opted for online certificate claims).
- During the programme, accurate records of assessment and achievement, at criterion level, should be kept.
- At the end of the programme, unit achievement is recorded as follows:
- All Pass criteria must be met for a learner to achieve a Pass
- If Merit and Distinction grades are available:
- All Pass and Merit criteria must be met to achieve a Merit
- All Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria must be met to achieve a Distinction.
- Unit achievement is recorded on the SRF or Edexcel Online form.
- You do not need to calculate a final grade. This is done by Edexcel (grade boundaries are published in the specifications).
- If a learner has completed one or more units, but not enough to achieve the qualification, a Record of Unit Achievement can be requested.
When is it done?
- Final certificate claims are made at the end of a programme. This closes the learner registration.
- For two-year programmes, you may wish to report interim grades for completed units after the first year. This is updated by the final certificate claim.
- Claims can be made at any time of the year, provided sufficient time has been given to complete the programme. Pending certificate claims are processed weekly.
Who is responsible?
- Your Exams Officer will have full administration access to Edexcel Online and will be responsible for submitting certificate claims and checking certificates received.
- Programme Managers should ensure that certificate claims are correct. SRFs and Edexcel Online claim forms should be proofread to ensure accuracy.
- There should be an agreed certification procedure for all BTEC programmes in the centre.
- The Quality Nominee should monitor the procedure to ensure that certificate claims are accurate and up to date.
Where can I find out more?
- The Information Manual is published annually and contains full details.
