2009 BTEC Pilot Next Steps survey
In 2009, Edexcel carried out a pilot survey to find out what BTEC students went on to do after they finished their BTEC qualification.
The key findings from the survey are outlined below:
- Amongst both BTEC National Diploma and BTEC First Diploma learners, formal progression is evident:
- 3 in 5 of BTEC National Diploma learners progress to further studies at university
- 7 in 10 of BTEC First Diploma learners progress to further college studies
- Over 80% of BTEC National Diploma, and over 70% of BTEC First Diploma learners progressed within the same sector.
- There is also an indication that BTEC qualifications deliver value to the individual learner in terms of enabling progression to employment, 11% of BTEC National Diploma learners had a job confirmed.
- Nearly half of all learners indicate that the BTEC was a formal requirement for progression…
- … and an impressive 85% of those who are studying indicate that the BTEC provided them with skills that are vital for their current studies.
- Those surveyed saw their BTEC qualifications as delivering value in the longer term, e.g. 52% of BTEC First Diploma learners and 29% of BTEC National Diploma learners saw their BTEC as helping to enhance their career, or provide a stepping stone towards their dream job.
- And value is not formal alone – there is a widespread agreement amongst learners that it delivers value across a number of dimensions, including organisation and confidence.
- The different learning experience offered by BTECs is seen by learners as an important strength. 68% of those surveyed valued the different learning experience offered by the BTECs, which also serves as an important motivational factor.
In addition, the survey found that:
- 45% of BTEC students find information on their course from a college prospectus.
- 86% of BTEC students choose their subjects themselves, with only 8% taking advice from a parent.
- 68% believe that a BTEC provides a different learning experience compared to other qualifications, with the practical 'hands on' nature of the course voted as the top reason for choosing a BTEC (27%). This is followed by different teaching methods (26%) and more independence (20%).
- Top motivations for studying a BTEC are: a desire to work in the sector (38%), a future career or education benefit (34%) and a different learning style (8%).
- Just 5% of post-BTEC students are not in employment or education, compared to 10.3% of all 16-18 year-olds.
Further information
The 2009 BTEC Pilot Next Steps survey was undertaken in two stages. Firstly, 344 students answered questions in an on-line survey. We followed this up by contacting 119 of them for a more in-depth interview about their plans.
