We have introduced a new Subject Advisor service to support all our English GCSE and A level qualifications. Led by the Subject Advisor, Clare Haviland, this service is designed to help solve your queries relating to our English qualifications and provide a means of sharing ideas, information and concerns.

The service also offers all teachers of English the opportunity to discuss and share English-related issues, such as what the new 2010 GCSE specifications have to offer.

Central to the service is our online English Community Forum which provides you with an opportunity to speak to other teachers, raise concerns and ask advice. Whether you have concerns about the new specifications or you want to know more about controlled assessment or set texts, you can use our English Community forum as a means to find out more. You can also read documents and use links that Clare Haviland has posted.

If you are an existing Edexcel centre, you can use the site and the materials posted on it to help with your planning and teaching of our current English qualifications. You can also provide us with feedback as to how we can improve our qualifications, our support and our services.

Clare Haviland’s biography:

Clare has been involved with secondary education in London since 1999, teaching English in large, non-selective, 11-18 inner-city secondary schools. She has held a comprehensive range of additional responsibilities including Assistant Headteacher (Head of Communications Faculty: English and MFL); Head of Year 10/11; Examinations Manager; Teacher in charge of NQTs, STs, OTTs; Lead on a ‘Narrowing the Gap’ project; and School Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator.

Previously, she taught English and study skills to under- and post-graduate international students, preparing them for study at British universities. Additionally, she taught IGCSE English at a secondary school in Malawi, as well as teaching English to adults and high school pupils in Switzerland for a number of years.   Clare is currently pursuing doctoral research in the area of 'How has the cultural phenomenon of globalisation with its associated effects on cultural identity impacted on the representation of walking and pedestrianism in British fiction and other art forms since 1975?'   Since 2008, she has been a Community Governor at a primary school, helping her keep in touch with whole-school issues, parents’ views about education, and secondary transfer.
