Centre and qualification approval for academic qualifications - UK centres only

You are here: Skip Navigation LinksEdexcel > I want to ...

Please refer to the documents at the foot of this page for an application form and information on the approval process.

Important notes for existing Edexcel centres

  • The recognition form is for new centres only. If you are already an Edexcel centre for GCSE and you want to submit entries for GCE, all you need to do is to confirm this in writing to the above address and you will be notified of your new centre status.

  • If you want to run/teach a new subject, please refer to the centre guidance and subject specification which will give you advice on ways of delivering the specification and on the resources needed. Please visit the Qualifications area of this website for more details.

Edexcel may require an inspector to visit your centre to inspect the proposed examination arrangements before the application can be considered. In this case, please ensure that your centre is ready for inspection prior to the inspector’s visit (see the JCQ's Instructions for conducting examinations (below)). It would be also most helpful if you could provide a local map indicating the exact location of the establishment.

Notes for independent (private) and independent special schools

  • All independent (private) and independent special schools must have Department for Children, Schools and Families registration. DCSF contact details are:

Tel: 0870 000 2288
Textphone/Minicom: 01928 794274
Fax: 01928 794248
Email: info@dcsf.gsi.gov.uk

  • The approval procedure may take up to three months to finalise.

How do I get approval to offer IGCSE qualifications in the UK?

IGCSEs can be delivered in both overseas and UK centres. However, centres should be aware that IGCSEs are not included in the DCSF list of approved qualifications in Section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act of 2000, and therefore do not count towards national league table points and are not eligible for funding.

UK centres that wish to offer IGCSE qualifications should email approvals@edexcel.com. Please include details of the subjects that you wish to offer, including the unit code and the session. There is no cost attached to the process of registering to deliver IGCSEs; there are no forms to complete; and further centre inspection is not required.
