- Advanced Extension Awards (AEA) were introduced for Advanced level candidates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in summer 2002.
- The final year for AEA is 2008-2009. The Extended Project can be used to replace AEA for any subject.
- AEAs are designed to challenge the most able Advanced level candidates by providing opportunities for them to demonstrate greater depth of understanding than is required at Advanced GCE.
- AEAs are based on A level subject criteria rather than individual specifications and are designed to require no additional teaching or resources.
- AEAs are graded on a two-point scale: Distinction and Merit. Candidates who do not reach the minimum standard for a Merit award will be reported as unclassified.
- AEA examinations are held in June each year, with 2009 being the final series.
