Practical Assessment

I've already done a security qualification. If I decide to do another one do I have to retake units I’ve already completed?

No. If you’ve previously completed one of our security qualifications, you'll only have to retake units you have already received a grade for if the unit content has changed.

If you want to carry forward your existing result(s), you will need to show your certificate and Notification of Performance when you register with your training provider. Your Notification of Performance shows the grade you got for each unit and is issued with your certificate.

Which courses contain common units?
A common unit is a unit that has the same content and is shared with other courses. Four of our security qualifications have common units:
  • Door Supervision
  • Security Guarding
  • Vehicle Immobilisation
  • CCTV Operations (Public Space Surveillance).
The common units are:
  • Working in the Private Security Industry
  • Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry*.

*CCTV Operations (Public Space Surveillance) does not contain Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry.

How are the tests assessed?

We offer two methods of testing: paper exams and onscreen. Both options are on-demand but if you take your tests onscreen, you'll receive your results sooner.

Please speak to your training provider to see which of these options they offer.

When can I apply for my SIA licence?

You can only apply for your licence once you have received your certificate and your training provider has uploaded your photo and signature on to the SIA database.

How can I apply for a SIA licence?

You can apply for a licence by visiting the SIA website.

When will I receive my certificate?

Once you have successfully completed all of your modules, your training provider will ask us to calculate your overall grade and issue you with a certificate. Once your certificate has been claimed, it will be sent to your training provider within 15 working days.

Why can’t SIA issue me with a licence?

A few common problems can prevent SIA from issuing you with a licence.

Problem Solution
Personal details on certificate and identity documents don’t match Check that the name and date of birth on your certificate match the details on your identity documents. If your certificate has the wrong information on it, return it to your training provider. They will be able to request we amend the certificate and our records so that they match your identity documents.
Licence application is missing a photo or signature If SIA doesn’t have a record of your photo or signature, check that your training provider has uploaded them.

If there is a different problem with your application, please contact us.
