Update on BTEC Entry 3 / Level 1 Health and Social Care specifications

We’d like to update you on recent developments which affect the teaching of our BTEC Entry 3 / Level 1 Health and Social Care specifications in schools and FE colleges.

We currently have two sets of BTEC Entry 3 / Level 1 Health and Social Care specifications running alongside each other. Both sets of qualifications are currently open for registrations, although some are not currently available for pre-16s.

2009 specifications

  • BTEC Entry Level 3 Award in Health and Social Care
  • BTEC Level 1 Award/Certificate/Diploma in Health and Social Care

2011 specifications

  • BTEC Level 1 Award in preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
  • BTEC Level 1 Award/Certificate in Introduction to Health and Social Care and Children’s and Young People’s Settings
  • BTEC Level 1 Award/Certificate in Introduction to Health and Social Care (adults and children and young people) Early Years and Childcare (Wales & Northern Ireland only)

Pre-16 learners
We recommend our 2009 Health and Social Care specifications for pre-16 learners. These qualifications offer a broad introduction to the sector, with clear progression opportunities to Level 2. These qualifications were included on the recent DfE performance tables list for KS4, meaning that they will contribute to the five A*-G performance measures. Find out more about Level 1 qualifications on the DfE list

The 2009 specifications are available for pre-16 learners, and are funded for eligible 16- to 18-year-olds and 19+ learners.

These qualifications are currently undergoing a review process to extend them beyond December 2012.

Post-16 learners
Our 2011 specifications are most suitable for post-16 learners. These qualifications have been designed to help learners understand the specific skills and knowledge needed to work in certain aspects of the health and social care sector.

The 2011 specifications are funded for eligible 16- to 18-year-olds and 19+ learners, but are currently not available for pre-16 learners.
