GCSE reforms 2012: Keeping you informed

GCSE reforms

Happy new year! In this first update of 2012, we have further information on Ofqual's proposed changes to the GCSE English specifications, including confirmation that GCSE English will be linear for first teaching September 2012, first exam summer 2014. We want to ensure that you have all the information and support you need to deliver the changes to GCSE in 2012, and will continue to keep you updated via this page.

Update 16, 2011 - Results of our Reading Ideas competition

Thank you for your great ideas about how to promote reading and your thoughts on how to approach literary heritage texts such as 'Great Expectations'.

I am pleased to announce the winner of this competition, Keira Lapsley, from Droitwich Spa High School, who has won
a copy of 'Dickens' Christmas: A Victorian Celebration' by Simon Callow, as well as £50-worth of Amazon vouchers.

Update 15, 2011 - Focus on reading

Overheard on the sidelines of a school rugby match:

Mum 1: Can you believe it? They're actually expecting them to read Dickens!

Mum 2: It’s ridiculous! What adult, let alone child, would want to read ‘Great Expectations’?

As English teachers, we’re all familiar with the challenges of moulding our charges into regular, enthusiastic readers. This update has some ideas for encouraging reading.
